KFSN ALUMNI ASSOCIATION… About Us
Since the mid-1950’s there was evidence of an “Alumni Association” of PFSN and KFSN graduates. Over the decades, the association became more of a social gathering, rather than a formal organization. Linda Taylor ’64 almost single handily kept the alumni intact. The alumni owe Linda much gratitude in ensuring that we had an ongoing presence.
At the 2002 Annual Alumni Luncheon, the attending alumni voted to move from being a social gathering into a formal professional Alumni Association with By-Laws, dues, and act according to the Roberts Rules of Order. Officers and a Board were elected. A primary purpose of the association was established. Under the leadership of then President Phyllis Plant Moroney ‘57A the purpose for existence became: “To make our presence visible within Kaiser Permanente and ensure KFSN would not be forgotten.”
- Since that time the association has flourished ensuring that KFSN was recognized as an integral part of Kaiser Permanente and that our history and legacy was documented for future generations. Most significantly,
- Display commemorating KFSN was installed in the Memory Corridor of the new Oakland Medical Center.
- Over $150,000 was raised by the alumni association to fund the sculpture of the KFSN Student Nurse, entitled: “Nursing: The Heart of Health Care”. It was gifted to the Oakland Medical Center, the home of our school at the opening of the new facility.
- Video presentations were developed under the sponsorship of KP’s Nurse Scholars Academy documenting the voices of alumni.
- Banners were created by Kaiser Permanente for display at medical centers and Regional/Corporate offices commemorating the School of Nursing.
- An article was written for a peer reviewed journal, Nursing Administrative Quarterly, January 2018. The article, Kaiser School of Nursing: A 70 Year Legacy of Disruptive Innovation, served as a precursor for the book.
- The book documenting the history and legacy of KFSN, Kaiser Foundation School of Nursing, A Legacy of Disruptive Innovation, 1947-1976, was published June 2020.
- Scholarships granted to nursing students occurs yearly as a means of ensuring the ongoing relevance of KFSN’s legacy.
- Memorabilia relating to KFSN is gathered and saved at the Kaiser Permanente Archives in Corporate Offices in Oakland.

- Annual luncheon held generally in April provides an excellent time for alumni to greet old friends and faculty.
The Alumni Association Board meets quarterly, generally at the Oakland Medical Center. Since the pandemic Zoom meeting have been successful. Committees include: Legacy Scholarship Committee, Luncheon Committee, and Legacy Committee.
